Services Offered by Dr. Cummins:
Dr. Andrew Cummins is a licensed Naturopathic Physician in the state of Connecticut. He received the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from the College of Professional Studies at National University of Health Sciences. Before entering his premedical studies at NUHS, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in education from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.
Dr. Cummins’ passion utilizing Naturopathic Medicine to improve the quality of life of individuals with chronic pain and Autoimmune disease began from his personal journey of 20 years. He offers his patients a unique perspective from years of experience living with the chronic inflammatory disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis. This disease can result in extreme pain and can affect any organ of the body including the heart, lungs, eyes, and gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Cummins is extremely passionate in educating and empowering his patients as well as their family and friends. One of the greatest battles every patient faces is making people around them understand how difficult day to day life can be. Patients in chronic pain not only need the body strengthened internally physiologically and externally physically, but as well as emotionally through the support and understanding of their loved ones.
For the first 7 years of living with AS, his rheumatologist helped him gain back his life of mobility and function with NSAIDs, steroids, and pain killers. However, when the combination of anti-inflammatory and pain medications could no longer relieve his pain and his concerned rheumatologist refused to increase his dosage for fear of destroying his liver at the age of 27, little help could be found for him. Having experienced first-hand the limits of pharmaceutical treatments in relieving pain and improving mobility, Dr. Cummins combines nutrition with botanical and nutritional supplementation, along with specific individualized exercises that support and strengthen the body to overcome pain and increase function. The exercise
program Foundation Training was so successful at reducing his pain and increasing his mobility that he became a certified foundation training instructor to teach others this powerful tool.
Dr. Cummins’ drive to help individuals with digestive problems also developed because of his own personal struggle with digestive issues. It was through the process of personal experience and thorough research that showed him the power of the gut-joint and gut-brain connections. Dr. Cummins discovered that when he started healing his gut that his joint pain, skin problems, anxiety, insomnia, heart palpitations, and chronic fatigue became better as well. That is why gut health is the foundation of his approach with patients who have digestive issues as well as joint problems, autoimmune disease, and other health concerns.
Through daily reading of the current medical literature Dr. Cummins knows that gut permeability, better known as “leaky gut” and mitochondrial dysfunction are at the root of many conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, anxiety, depression, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and most forms of Autoimmune disease and chronic inflammatory conditions. This is the reason he uses Functional Lab Testing to assess gut and mitochondrial function to discover the underlying cause of each patient’s health concerns and to guide specific treatment.
In addition to deepening his understanding of autoimmune disease, gut health, and foundation training, Dr. Cummins enjoys spending time with his wonderful wife of 10 years, Rio. While teaching in the inner-city schools of Peoria for 6 years, he developed a compassion for underserved populations and a passion for tutoring, mentorship, and coaching basketball. He and his wife Rio served with the Peoria Dream Center providing hope and encouragement during times of struggle, pain, and hardship. They both have a passion for serving in the inner-city through various ministries and organizations.
