“Medicine is a delicate balance between Art and Science”.
Born and raised on Cape Cod, Massachusetts Dr. Mara Davidson’s first career focus and passion was filmmaking. During her freshman year at Drexel University, pursuing an undergraduate degree in Film & Video, an interest in the medical field began to blossom. After returning home from the Cannes Film Festival and completing her internship at NFL Films Dr. Davidson decided to devote herself to the study of medicine. She began taking pre-medical coursework while completing her Film & Video degree, became a volunteer at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and enrolled in a certificate program entitled, “Humanities, Health Sciences, and Society”. Dr. Davidson was the first graduate at Drexel University to earn this distinction. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree, Magna cum Laude with an Honors distinction from Drexel University. Dr. Davidson then entered the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program at Drexel University’s College of Medicine. While completing pre-medical coursework she was accepted to the Pre-Medical Volunteer program at the St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, PA.
Once ready to enroll in medical school Dr. Davidson selected to attend a university in the Cayman Islands for its fast-paced, accelerated learning structure. Enrolling there enabled her to double major as not only a medical student but an MBA candidate. An opportunity to earn two degrees at once was an exciting prospect for Dr. Davidson and she welcomed the challenge. However, the conventional medical approach that was taught did not match Dr. Davidson’s belief regarding patient care. Dr. Davidson left allopathic medical school citing conflicting philosophies. Believing that a whole body approach to healthcare was possible to learn in medicine Dr. Davidson began searching for alternative forms of medical practice. When Dr. Davidson discovered Naturopathic Medicine she found her true calling. While still earning her MBA Dr. Davidson applied to the University of Bridgeport, College of Naturopathic Medicine in Bridgeport, CT. Upon acceptance and taking her first grouping of coursework she knew this was her path. In the middle of her second year Dr. Davidson completed her MBA in Health Care Management with the equivalent of Magna cum Laude standing.
Upon entering her clinical training Dr. Davidson began preceptoring with many naturopathic physicians along the east coast, including the Shalva Clinic in Westport, CT and Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Philadelphia, PA. During her last year of medical school Dr. Davidson was accepted for an externship at Shalva Clinic. She also decided to increase her Naturopathic arsenal with additional studies in nutrition by enrolling in the University of Bridgeport’s Nutrition Institute in order to earn a Master of Science in Human Nutrition. Dr. Davidson earned her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree, cum Laude in May 2014, then completed the Master of Science in Human Nutrition degree, Summa cum Laude in December of the same year.
Returning to the Shalva Clinic as a naturopathic physician has a warm and comfortable feeling of coming home. Dr. Davidson utilizes a combination of nutritional medicine, vitamin and mineral supplementation, botanical medicine, mind-body medicine, and hydrotherapy specifically tailored to each patient in order to restore health and balance. She is trained in conventional pharmaceuticals and therapies and is open to working with other healthcare practitioners in order to provide her patients with a healthcare team to suit their own individual needs.
Dr. Davidson sees patients of all ages for acute, sick visits as well as chronic conditions. She also encourages patients to see her for maximizing their full health potential. Dr. Davidson focuses part of her practice on anxiety and depression as well as supportive cancer care. Anxiety and depression in people of all ages is becoming an ever common and rampant part of our society. The reasons for this increase are multi-faceted; causes can include but are not limited to food allergies, neurotransmitter imbalance, cardiac conditions, gastrointestinal imbalance, sleep issues, and stress. Together you and Dr. Davidson will find answers through in-depth conversations, conventional and alternative lab testing, supplementation and lifestyle changes.
Naturopathic medicine has an incredible ability to support patients currently facing cancer or those who are in remission. No matter where someone is in their diagnosis, Naturopathy can make a tremendous difference in improving the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation as well as supporting and strengthening the immune system. A comprehensive plan that considers and complements all prescribed treatments from all practitioners involved in one’s healing results in a truly integrative medical experience tailored to your optimal well-being.
