Craniosacral Therapy – Could You Benefit?
Oftentimes, healthcare providers only look for metabolic causes of disease and rarely delve into the importance of proper structure. Structure plays a huge role in our bodies ability to heal.
Think of it this way: If your key bends out of shape, you can attempt to unlock a door many times and on many different days with no success. This is true of our bodies as well. We often try to unlock our potential to heal, trying to open the door with as many keys (treatments) as we can find without thinking to fix the structure of our original key.
Because our nervous system carries so much complex information ranging from pain signals, sensory input from our environment, emotions and memories, it’s beneficial for all sorts of medical conditions. Specifically, it’s helpful for people who struggle with a mixture of emotional and physical health problems. Indications for cranioscaral therapy include:
- Poor memory and learning disabilities
- Mood disturbances, PTSD, depression, anxiety, PMS and more
- Chronic pain from sports injuries or accidents and post concussion syndrome
- Chronic pain and tension from Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, and more
- Headaches, insomnia, and stress related conditions such as IBS and TMJ
What is craniosacral therapy?
Craniosacral therapy utilizes gentle touch to help restore proper alignment and functioning of the central nervous system. When the central nervous system is functioning optimally, people often see increased energy, improved mood and productivity, happier relationships and most importantly, improved health.
What to expect during a craniosacral therapist session
Craniosacral therapists utilize very light touch therapy (about the weight of a nickel) to assess the alignment of the central nervous system. Your therapist will use gentle techniques to restore alignment and clear restrictions in your body. Many people feel calmer and contented after sessions because it encourages them to enter a deeply relaxed state. The benefits of one session can extend for hours to days after the therapy.
How many sessions will I need?
Every individual has their unique struggles with illness and journey through life, so it can be hard to estimate how many sessions they’ll need. Some people find relief in one session, others find relief over four sessions, while others need more regular check-ins.
