Medical thermal imaging better known as thermography is a radiation-free, touch-free, non-invasive whole-body health assessment. The technology of thermography has been utilized for decades and is an invaluable health screening tool for both men and women. In addition, thermography is renowned for assessing and monitoring breast health and is ideal for women of all ages; dense breasts, implants, inconclusive mammograms, and those with a history of cancer.
Breast thermography is based on the principle that blood vessel activity is higher in pre-cancerous and cancerous tissue verses in healthy tissue. The disease process of cancer has an ever-increasing need for nutrients. Neoangiogenesis, a phenomenon specific to cancer permits the creation of new blood vessels to supply such nutrients and ensures the growth of cancerous cells. With the activity of new blood vessels, there is an increased blood flow that produces temperature variations that can be visualized by an infrared camera.
What to Expect
Prior to the appointment there are preparation steps that must be strictly followed to allow for the most accurate results. Once in the office, you will meet with a CT Thermography’s medical thermographer to review the screening procedure. The imaging will take place in a private, temperature-controlled room. You will be asked to disrobe according to the screening type and will be left for 15 minutes to allow the body to adjust to the room’s temperature. Following the acclamation period, you will be positioned in front of the imaging system so that the relevant surfaces of the body are imaged accordingly. The imaging series takes between 5-15 minutes depending on the screening.
Following the appointment, the images are electronically forwarded to a team of doctors that specialize in thermology and oncology for a three-step analyzation process. A detailed report including the thermographic images will be sent to both you and your medical practitioner within 5-7 business days following the interpretation process. An in-depth consultation is then scheduled with the medical thermographer for a full understanding of the findings and images.
