Stress is all around us. Emotional, physical, and chemical stress has a dramatic effect upon our health and well being. It is something that is very hard to avoid within our current environment, but there are steps we can take to combat stress and to mitigate the effects on our bodies.
Nutrition, sleep, deep breathing, pure water, and exercise are foundational to our health and for keeping our mind and body in balance to prevent disease. These core principles are also needed to overcome stress and the detrimental impact upon our physiology.
When we are not able to keep these core principles in balance or when we need extra support because of a specific health condition or the side effects of medications more solutions are needed. Adaptogens are one of the most powerful solutions to fighting against stress. Adaptogens such as Lemon Balm, Passion Flower, Valerian, Ashwagandha, Rhodiola Rosea, Licorice, and American Ginseng bring balance to the body by targeting the adrenal glands.
The adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. One of the main purposes of your adrenal glands is to enable your body to deal with stress. Your adrenal glands secrete various hormones and catecholamines. These chemicals are secreted in higher amounts when the body is under stress. Adaptogens such as the ones listed above help your body deal with stress by balancing these hormones and catecholamines.
I always get asked the question, “How do I know if I need Adaptogens, amino acids, or other nutrients?” This is a great question and the reason I run an Organic Acids Test on each patient. This simple urine test will show if an individual is deficient in certain nutrients, needs energy support, needs detox support, has yeast overgrowth, or has a high turnover of certain neurotransmitters/catecholamines that can signal high levels of stress and the need for adaptogenic botanicals. Also, the test can show if an individual is deficient in certain neurotransmitters/catecholamines as is seen with adrenal fatigue with long standing stress. This could be the reason for chronic fatigue, anxiety, or depression and show the need for amino acid precursors.
